The municipal elections in Alberta are on Monday, October 15, 2007, 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM.

Advance voting in Calgary is available from October 4-7 & 9-10, Noon - 7:00 PM.

Note that there are no mail-in ballots this time, and you must bring id.

========================================
ELECTION & CANDIDATE INFORMATION

I've setup a website, specifically for this election, with extensive links to detailed information for voters (where to vote, finding which ward you are in, etc.), and complete lists of the candidates (including their contact info, websites, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, etc.).

The site includes a list of candidate forums and events.

I've also included a separate section where I outline my opinions of the issues and candidates.

The website is:
http://calgary2007.grantneufeld.ca/
SOCIAL JUSTICE & ENVIRONMENTAL CANDIDATES

I've seen the following candidates at various social justice and environment meetings, events and actions. I've seen all of them at community rallies, pickets and/or marches. This is not necessarily an endorsement from me, and is definitely not an endorsement by the Activist Network or any affiliated projects or groups (blah, blah, disclaimer, blah, blah).

* Ward 1: Jennifer Banks
She has been extremely active on housing issues, among other social concerns.

* Ward 3: Helen Larocque
Very active in the labour movement. Involved in efforts like the No Sweat Coalition.

* Ward 6: James Kohut
Active on environmental issues and, especially, anti-(corporate-)globalization type stuff.

* Ward 8: Lindsay Luhnau
All sorts of environmental work, including her day job.

* Ward 9: Joe Ceci
The most actively supportive incumbent on issues of housing and poverty.

* Ward 11: Brian Pincott
Co-founder and past co-chair of the Sierra Club Chinook Group. Has worked on various projects including pesticide-free, housing, urban sprawl, etc.

Their contact info and websites are available in the candidates list on my election site.

========================================
HOW YOU CAN HELP

All of the campaigns would benefit greatly from more volunteers and donations. Even a couple hours of help can make a big difference - especially where the races are close. I strongly encourage everyone to contribute at least a couple of hours over the next two weeks to help out one or more of these candidates. A few dollars would be helpful, too.
Stop Coastal Oil Development in BC!

The threat of coastal oil and gas development looms over BC's wild and beautiful Pacific coast. For over thirty years there have been both provincial and federal moratoria in place to protect Canada's Pacific coast from oil and gas development. Currently, the BC government is intensively pressuring the federal government to lift their moratorium in order to open up the Pacific coast to oil and gas development by Chevron and Shell.
Coastal oil and gas development would seriously harm our marine ecosystems, fishing and seafood industry, and whale-watching industry through pollution and seismic testing (sonic blasts in the ocean that kill and harm marine life). At stake is the ecological integrity of our Pacific coast and the livelihoods of thousands of BC citizens that depend on these traditional coastal assets. We need your help to protect Canada's wild Pacific coast from inappropriate, dirty development.

More than seventy different interest groups ranging from tourism and fishermen to First Nations and environmental groups have joined together in the Oil Free Coast Alliance, and are on the provincial and federal governments to maintain the moratoria on any coastal oil and gas development off BC's coast. Here are some of the reasons:

75% of the respondents to the federal government's own public input process in the spring of 2004 supported keeping the moratorium in place.
The environmental and economic consequences of a major oil spill or blow-out in Canada's most earthquake prone region would be devastating to coastal communities, as was the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska. Earthquakes 8.1 (1949) and 7.0 (1970) on the Richter Scale have occurred in the Queen Charlotte Islands region. Also, the fiercest winds in Canada, recorded at almost 200 km/hr and the resulting giant waves there could demolish oil rigs and tankers.
Major oil spills aside, inherent in coastal oil and gas production is daily chronic pollution, including the discharge of toxic drilling fluids and muds, chronic oil leakages, and small oil spills that are unavoidable. Toxic drilling fluids and muds include mercury and heavy metals like chromium and lead that contaminate fish and invertebrates.
In order to locate oil and gas deposits, seismic tests must be done using air gun blasts that send shock waves through the ocean that deafen whales, kill fish and invertebrates, and drive fish and whales long distances away from their feeding areas and migration routes.
Coastal oil and gas development runs counter to Canada's Kyoto Protocol commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrocarbon extraction and production accounts for almost 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.
Few direct jobs would be created for coastal communities. Foreign work crews with the necessary specialized skills would be brought in from around the world, as is normally the case. Oil rigs would be constructed where labour is cheapest and the facilities exist, likely in South Korea or China. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) forbids any laws that give first dibs on jobs to local people.
Federal Government Under Pressure to Lift Moratorium

The BC Liberal provincial government started the process to lift the moratoria when they were elected in 2001. Prior to the January 23, 2006 federal election, the Federal Minister of Natural Resources Gary Lunn stated his interest in allowing for oil exploration off BC's coast, which would require lifting the moratorium. It's important to let the new Conservative government know whether or not you want them to maintain the moratorium on coastal oil exploration, drilling, and transportation in BC right now!

It is vitally important that we flood the Prime Minister's office with letters of concern about offshore oil and gas development. Each letter counts for hundreds of people who feel the same way but didn't send in a letter. This is an issue that affects all Canadians.

Please sign the petition at www.okanaganpetition.org Writing a letter is even better. WCWC advocates creating a National Park in the South OKanagan Similkameen region. For more info., read on or check the website

Our Greatest Conservation Opportunity: Protect Canada's Desert, Grasslands and Ponderosa Pine Forests in Southern BC!

Currently, Canadians are being presented with one of the most exceptional conservation opportunities in our history. The BC and federal governments have agreed to undertake a Feasibility Study for a potential national park reserve to protect the desert, grasslands, and Ponderosa pine ecosystems of the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys in southern British Columbia. The local residents and the millions of Canadians who've visited the area know it is perhaps the most beautiful region of the country. Whether the national park reserve becomes a reality - or a lost opportunity - depends on YOUR input and the input of all Canadians.

This region, around the towns of Osoyoos, Oliver, Keremeos and Cawston, has more species at risk than any other region of BC. Canyon wrens, white-headed woodpeckers, badgers, California bighorn sheep, tiger salamanders, spadefoot toads, pallid bats, spotted bats, scorpions, and rattlesnakes all inhabit the area. A national park here would encompass a greater diversity of ecosystems than any national park in Canada - 6 of BC's 14 major ecosystem types ("biogeoclimatic zones") are found in this little region.

National parks are very rare - there are only 7 national parks in BC, in contrast to over 1000 provincial parks and protected areas here. National parks tend to be much larger than provincial parks and have the highest standards of environmental protection. A national park reserve in the South Okanagan-Similkameen region would be the greatest conservation opportunity for an area that is the greatest conservation priority in Canada.

Anyone who lives in North America knows that national parks greatly enhance local economies by increasing tourism revenues and providing local jobs, not to mention increasing the environmental quality of life for local people and all Canadians.

This proposed park - a once in a lifetime opportunity -could very well be derailed by vocal opposition forces unless YOU speak up to the political decision-makers!

Hey Calgary!

I'm just passing through for a few days (I'll be leaving sometime between wednesday and friday) and I thought I'd put on some classes if people were interested. I can show you and help you open doors to: drills for improving control and grace, families of tricks and moves, a variety of styles, deeper and more fluid expression, and a structure to help you understand poi at deeper levels.

I like to work with intermidate and advanced poi, but I can help anyone at any level create a foundation of understanding for this beautiful art form. This is all very last minute, so I don't have a space or a solid time in mind, maybe starting tuesday afternoon or evening? It all depends on the response. If anyone knows of a nice indoor space, I would love to play inside, but outside would be great too. The class/classes will be by donation and barter, so give whatever you feel is appropriate. I've never taught a formal "class" before, but I do have a wealth of knowledge, experience and dedication. I've done a weekend intensive workshop with Nick Woolsey, I've been to two fire spinning gatherings with over a 100 performers at each (FireDrums and Wild Fire) and I spun with the Pyronauts (an internation all-star fire spinning collective) in the fire conclave at Burning Man. Through those experience I was able to spin with some of the most established flow artists in the world. I picked up what I could and through the process of my development created my own style and understanding of poi. I feel blessed to have had those experiences and be able pick up two socks and have so much fun with them, just flinging them around.

Families I specialize in:
stalls
flowers
crossers
isolations
poly-rhythms
inversions
between the legs
behind the back and waist wraps
anti-spinny goodness
lock-outs
short poi
hyperloops and Airwraps
body wraps
butterfly variations
weave patterns
buzzsaw variations
turns

I brought 4 sets of poi with me, so I can lend out a few, but not too many. Bring extra if you can. It's always good to try different types of poi! I'll check back here tomorrow night to see where people are at.

I hope this meets you all with love, light, and a sweet taste in your mouth.
Vi An I have kept a secret from you for a long time. You are probablly wondering right now WHO I am right? Well this isn't my real name its simply just a handle. Anyhoo. My boyfriend of 14 years spent 9 of those years infactuating over you, not in a creapy way but in a totally humbling and enchanted way! I always knew but I never wanted him to feel bad for his owning feelings just for you. I have let him go and given his freedom and space to his own thoughts what ever they all are?! I'm so over him its been like 4 years now FUCK WOW! He's not a looser. I'm the looser! I'm the easy and well not rotten girl that tree thing describes yeah that be me! I admit I do not enjoy depth it quite frankly bores me, people RAMBLING on and on and on and hardon and onhard about themselves over and overies and ovums over again and aging and egging again and again! GIVE IT A BREAK GAW_D! People are so FULL of themselves.

BUT YOU missy VI AN -- you must lead a very sad beautiful life -- what little I know of you and what all I heard of you, your name preceeds you, you big super star! High&Mighty goddess of the muses, tickling men's fancy areas with your finger dances and speaking str8 to their harts with that deep voice. Poccessing them in their dreams and hipnotizing them as they waken from a dizzy'ing wet dream of YOU!! They say you are the quinticential "ancient of femininity". They say a lot of things when they are consumed by their own ideals and cowardness. They would never admit to it oh NO, they will only secretly confess to it while they masturbate in the public toilets or silently recite their desires for a GURL like you between their prayers. They will NEVER persue you so don't worry, they will remain fleeting as long as you remain strong and full of CONVICTION! I feel so sorry for you, so SORRY for YOU! I repeast YOU must lead a very SAD beautiful life huh?! In your tower over towers. I see you around and ALL around, I don't know what the big HUGE FUSS is all about, whats the commotion?! You're just YOU, me I'm just me -- WHAT THE F$*% makes us so different or you SO unique?! WHAT the hell do they all obsess over you like that, LOOSERS, can't even come up to your face and tell you, they just flee and whine about loosing you, LOOSERS. Is that why your excuse for having a hard time "D8TING guys" because you hide too much within your music career? Lame excuse, admit it I'm on to something?! You need to be more agressive with men sista or atleast give in to their desires once and a DAMNN while huh?! All strong and primo all the time, what do you look like when you wake up take a picture of that and post it why DON'T YOU?! I'm not bitter. I'm not holding anything against you. You are a GREAT competition for me. I still get all the guys I lay my eyes and fingers on. I'm not worried about that sista.

Guys talk to me about you when we walk by you, when we have stood in the corners gawking at you, listening to your fingers language of muses. We watch while lurking and witness the spirits dancing all around you, yes we DO SEE them (the guys always whisper so). I don't see anything but a well put together girl, IF THAT is even what you R? It don't matter. They say F'ing who F'in cares what Vi An is??? Wha? Its just the meer IDEA of YOU they fall in love with -- they would NEVER be brave to touch you with a wet nap in their hands but they will WORSHIP you in their every day dream and woken lives! You get all the old men who finally reached a stage in their SAD lives FULL OF remorse and self-betrays who USE you as an excuse to finally confess their faults, for preventing themselves from the courage to get to know and get to embrace someone LIKE YOU for their lives! I may be easy but YOU are hopeless romantic so count your stars and sing to them often. I'd be damned if one of these guys in Calgary falls in love with you, who would PROUDLY and boldly display you around his arms like they DO me all around town and REALLY REALLY mean it! Those cowards wont, so count your stars and sing to them often.

I am going to go lesbo and feel what it is like to find a girl for my own JUST like you or atleast hah the IDEAL of you.

I LOVE this darkness in me I REVEL in its power over me because you SPARKED it in me, but you wont remember where or when. Its those EYES of yours dark, so dark and piercing, wells of infinity swells my soul and sufficates me, inescapeable glances coy and demure, those don't MESS with ME looks you cast without knowing it. DAMN gurl you are good.

Ive just been hitch hiking around bc and alberta for the last two weeks and i decided to stop in ground in calgary for a little while, aka a couple of months and i wanna cause some activism havoc!!! Also im looking for energy minded individuals who may be artists, musicians, beat boxers, fire spinners and many more, just maybe starting something like meeting together everyweek somewhere and drumming spinning fire, or just hanging out talk about the world and what we can do. Lets make something happen, collective art or something, i was just in victoria on vancouver island for the last two and a half months and theres a great community of artistically minded awesome individuals and a lot of work is happening in terms of creation and fun in general. Lots of music, singing circles, chakra activation, organic living basically, oh ya did i say drumming too?? drummming, djembe drumming is a must if anyone is to hang out lol, i myself dont have one yet, here anyway, mine is still in vancouver. SO if anyone in the tribe wants to get together to make some art, spin fire, spraypaint, protest a good cause, go on bike missions around town ( i still gotta find one :P), find cool stuff on the ground, make music, have spontaneous eruptions of crazyness, dress up and run around town in costumes, make poetry, draw, have collectives, and many more... LETS DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm looking for a room, which is a decent--> large size, bright, and in a positive household.

i'll be working downtown, so it would also have to be close to city centre on a transit line (since i don't have a car). i may have an outdoor cat with me as well, as my partner as i are not sure who should take the cat until he moves out to join me in a year's time.

if anyone has any leads, i'd be grateful if you shared them with me, as this is difficult to arrange from bc.
New sour gas hearings likelyDisaster plan expected to draw fire

By MICHAEL PLATT, CALGARY SUN

Calgarians living under the cloud of a potential sour gas disaster will likely get their say about four proposed wells at a new set of public hearings in April.

Those hearings, ordered yesterday by the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board, will only be held if someone complains about emergency plans for the southeast wells -- something Ald. Ric McIver said is a certainty.

"I think new hearings should be the case, no matter what," said McIver, whose ward borders on the proposed Compton Petroleum drilling site. "It's good that the public will have a hearing before anything goes ahead."

The EUB has ordered Compton to consult with all parties living within the 9.7-km emergency zone about a emergency response plan which must be filed no later than Jan. 1, 2006.

Both the city and Calgary Health Region are grudgingly helping to devise that plan, despite having questioned the safety of placing potentially deadly wells within a few kilometres of Calgary.

If anyone complains about the disaster plan, the EUB said it will order April hearings for all interested parties, which could include more than 60,000 people affected since the emergency zone was increased from 4 km to 9.7 km.

EUB spokesman Bob Curran said yesterday: "We want to make sure Calgarians understand, and people in the area understand, that we are very, very concerned about public safety."

Last June, the EUB agreed to let Compton drill, so long as the 4-km evacuation zone was extended to a 9.7-km emergency area, including a 5-km evacuation zone.
