hey everyone, im a new addition to town and im looking to rock things up a bit. Ive just been hitch hiking around bc and alberta for the last two weeks and i decided to stop in ground in calgary for a little while, aka a couple of months and i wanna cause some activism havoc!!! Also im looking for energy minded individuals who may be artists, musicians, beat boxers, fire spinners and many more, just maybe starting something like meeting together everyweek somewhere and drumming spinning fire, or just hanging out talk about the world and what we can do. Lets make something happen, collective art or something, i was just in victoria on vancouver island for the last two and a half months and theres a great community of artistically minded awesome individuals and a lot of work is happening in terms of creation and fun in general. Lots of music, singing circles, chakra activation, organic living basically, oh ya did i say drumming too?? drummming, djembe drumming is a must if anyone is to hang out lol, i myself dont have one yet, here anyway, mine is still in vancouver. SO if anyone in the tribe wants to get together to make some art, spin fire, spraypaint, protest a good cause, go on bike missions around town ( i still gotta find one :P), find cool stuff on the ground, make music, have spontaneous eruptions of crazyness, dress up and run around town in costumes, make poetry, draw, have collectives, and many more... LETS DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Newbie to Town, and look for people who like to play with fire and politics :P`
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 11:11 AMHiya wind, welcome to CowTown.
Probably the best place to start is the weekly drumming/fire circle at Riley Park. I haven't made it out to one yet but for the last several summers people have been getting together Sundays around dusk at the west end of Riley Park (just south of SAIT/ACAD or west of Sunnyside) to drum and dance and such. You'll meet lots of people there (maybe even me if I can EVER get a Sunday night off).
Be forewarned though, Calgary's a pretty conservative town. Its a challenge to get things going here. Things are improving though, new energy is always great! -

Re: Newbie to Town, and look for people who like to play with fire and politics :P`
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 9:40 PMjust like i said to you, man let what happens in the course of my time here happen, im going to be busy canvassing for greenpeace for most of the week but anything would help, its really the first time ive gotten into really doing things for myself, good things, and doing things like protesting or painting or making collective art, or beatboxing for hours with people, i dont know really what will happen, but as a message to everyone else, if theyres stuff you want to do thats creative or just plain out there and you need some people or a person to help you out, and maybe get into it too
im the man

Re: Newbie to Town, and look for people who like to play with fire and politics :P`
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 6:42 AMhey Julian!
you should seek out grant newfeld or gordon christie
they are two big activists in town here
best place to go to meet activists is the arusha centre where they host things like the revolutionary knitting circle
also, yeah the drum circle, in years past, would have been a great place to meet like minded folks. the problem is that at the end of last years circle outings, eye noticed a lot of drunken kids showing up to get wasted and "hang out with the hippies in the park". Not everyone there was like that, but eye remember one night in particular where over 50 drunk kids arrived and there were only 10 of us trying to drum and hold the energy.....not sure how it's going so far this year as eye haven't been able to make it out yet.....worth a try though. -

Re: Newbie to Town, and look for people who like to play with fire and politics :P`
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 8:39 AMMaybe the drum circle should move ? Its like a microcosm of what happens everywhere, the people who find a place and make it magic is always overrun by other people who are attracted to that energy but dont give back, or give neg vibes back. Nelson BC is a good example, and now Saltspring Island too is getting too developed because of the inflow, theres some new places in bc now that people are developing the magick, as far as i know, so who do we gotta talk to to move it?

Re: Newbie to Town, and look for people who like to play with fire and politics :P`
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 9:48 AMwell part of the magik of the circle is that it has been running free of rule for years now. It has no organizers, or rulers, or set times....basically people who have moved away, can show up in Calgary at the park on a SUnday night in the summer, and people are there drumming. We've also (so far) had support and interest from the people living along the edge of the park, so we've not had the cops called on us or had trouble. Eye'm hoping this doesn't change with the new influx of loud kids.
Anyway, it's worth a try to even start a new circle somewhere -
